Definition

Ethereum is a blockchain that runs programs — smart contracts — as well as payments. It launched in 2015 and moved from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake with The Merge in September 2022. Most DeFi, NFT and DAO applications run on it or on chains that inherit its tooling.

Key points

  • Smart contracts allow full applications to be built on-chain
  • Proof of Stake consensus; ETH can be staked for rewards
  • Layer 2 networks such as Arbitrum, Optimism and Base reduce fees
  • Origin of widely used standards including ERC-20 and ERC-721

Watch out for

  • · Gas fees can spike when the network is busy
  • · Smart contract vulnerabilities can drain funds
  • · Staking carries lock-up and validator operation risks
  • · There is no fixed supply cap
