In short

Ethena is a protocol that issues USDe, a dollar-denominated synthetic asset backed by crypto collateral, and it went live in 2024. It holds collateral while opening an equal short position in perpetual futures, a delta-neutral structure that cancels out price movement. ENA is the protocol's governance token.

Key points

  • USDe is not a bank-backed stablecoin but a synthetic asset hedged with derivatives
  • Its yield comes from perpetual funding rates and from staking rewards on the collateral
  • Managing collateral and positions involves centralised exchanges and external custodians
  • ENA is the governance token used for protocol decisions

Definition

A protocol that issues USDe, a synthetic dollar that aims to hold its value by pairing spot crypto holdings with offsetting short futures positions.

Most dollar-pegged stablecoins are backed by dollars or Treasuries the issuer holds at a bank, which means depending on that bank and that issuer. Ethena was designed around a different question: can a dollar value be maintained while the backing stays in crypto?

The method is called delta-neutral. If ETH is taken as collateral, an equal amount of ETH perpetual futures is sold short. When ETH falls, the spot holding loses value but the short gains, and vice versa, so the collateral's dollar value stays roughly flat.

Depositing USDe yields sUSDe, which accrues a return. That return comes from the funding rate perpetual longs pay shorts, and from staking rewards on the collateral. Both vary with market conditions, and funding rates can turn negative.

Positions are opened on centralised exchanges, but the collateral is not left on those exchanges: external custodians hold it while the exchange recognises it as margin. That limits exchange-failure risk, though dependence on both custodians and exchanges remains.

Watch out for

  • · If funding rates stay negative, the cost of maintaining the hedge can exceed the yield
  • · USDe has no fiat backing and should not be treated as equivalent to a fiat-backed stablecoin
  • · It depends on centralised exchanges and custodians, whose failure or suspension would affect the whole protocol

Frequently asked questions

  • Is USDe the same as other stablecoins?

No. Its backing is a combination of crypto holdings and derivative positions rather than deposits or Treasuries, so both how it holds value and how it could fail are different.
