What is Lido DAO (LDO)?

In short

Lido is a protocol that makes Ethereum staking accessible without a large deposit. In exchange for ETH you receive stETH, a receipt token that stays usable across DeFi while the stake is locked. LDO is the governance token of the DAO that runs the protocol, and is separate from stETH.

Key points

  • Lets you stake without meeting the minimum deposit a validator normally requires
  • Issues stETH in place of your ETH, which can be reused as DeFi collateral (liquid staking)
  • Actual validator operation is split across a set of node operators approved by the DAO
  • LDO is for governance; it is not a claim on staking rewards

Definition

A liquid staking protocol that pools user ETH, delegates it to node operators for staking, and issues stETH to represent each depositor's share.

Running an Ethereum validator requires a substantial amount of ETH and the ability to keep a server online continuously. Most users cannot meet both conditions, which is the gap protocols like Lido were built to fill.

Deposit ETH and you receive stETH representing the same amount. Node operators selected by the DAO run the validators, and rewards, net of fees, flow through to stETH holders. stETH is designed so that a holder's balance grows on its own.

What makes this practical is how widely stETH is accepted across DeFi: it can be posted as collateral in lending protocols or swapped for ETH on a DEX, so staked capital stays mobile. Since Ethereum enabled withdrawals, it can also be redeemed for ETH through the protocol.

At the same time, the concentration of staking in a single protocol has been raised repeatedly as a decentralisation concern for the network. The DAO has responded by expanding the operator set and opening up participation.

Watch out for

  • · The stETH/ETH exchange rate is set by the market and can drift from 1:1 depending on demand
  • · A contract bug or node operator failure can reduce the value of deposited assets
  • · Staking rewards may be taxable, so check how they are treated where you live

Frequently asked questions

  • Does buying LDO earn staking rewards?

No. Staking rewards accrue to stETH; LDO is used to vote on protocol decisions. The similar naming is a common source of confusion.
