Definition
Operating a node that holds the full chain locally and validates transactions and blocks for itself. It removes the need to query outside services and eliminates a point of information leakage.
With a light client or a hosted RPC, every balance check is a question put to someone else. Run your own node and that question never leaves your machine. Which addresses you look at, and when, stops leaving the building — one leak closed.
The second benefit is verification. A node checks for itself that blocks and transactions follow the rules. Instead of trusting someone's assertion about your balance, you read a figure your own machine computed. It is the 'don't trust, verify' premise of blockchains actually carried out.
The cost is operational. Bitcoin needs hundreds of gigabytes, Ethereum considerably more, and the initial sync takes time. You also need reliable uptime and regular updates. Not everyone needs this, but it is worth considering for substantial holdings or long-term use.
