In short

Celestia is a network that provides only one part of what a blockchain does: publishing data and guaranteeing it was published. It launched in October 2023. It does not execute transactions; instead, rollups and other chains post their data to it to obtain cheap data availability.

Key points

  • A modular design: no execution, only data publication and ordering
  • Light nodes verify publication by sampling small portions of the data
  • Rollups keep their own execution environment and post only data here
  • A Proof of Stake chain built with the Cosmos SDK

Definition

A blockchain specialised in data availability, providing ordering and verification that data was genuinely published, without executing transactions.

A rollup executes elsewhere but must publish its transaction data somewhere. Without published data, nobody can verify the results or recover their assets. That guarantee — that the data was genuinely made available — is data availability. It used to mean posting to Ethereum itself, which was expensive.

Celestia does only this. The chain accepts blobs of data, organises them by namespace and fixes their order. It never interprets what they mean. With no execution environment, it is structurally simpler and cheaper.

Its key technique is data availability sampling. Block data is made redundant with erasure coding, and light nodes fetch only small random portions. If enough nodes each check different portions successfully, the whole block is almost certainly available. Because verification does not require downloading everything, ordinary machines can take part.

This is the flagship example of the modular blockchain thesis, which separates execution, settlement, data availability and consensus into distinct layers. TIA pays for blob space and is used for staking and governance.

Watch out for

  • · Several options provide data availability, including capabilities added to Ethereum itself
  • · A rollup posting data here operates under different security assumptions than one posting to Ethereum
  • · Initial allocations unlock in stages; consult published schedules for how supply evolves

Frequently asked questions

  • Do applications run on Celestia?

Celestia itself does not execute smart contracts. Applications run on separate rollups that post their data to it.
