In short

A foundation is a non-profit entity set up to fund and promote a particular blockchain or protocol. It usually holds a slice of the token supply and spends it on development grants and outreach, which puts it in charge of where ecosystem money goes. Because it is a legal entity, a project that calls itself decentralised still has an identifiable decision-maker at its centre.

Key points

  • A non-profit that funds protocol development and outreach
  • Typically holds part of the supply for grants
  • Duties and disclosure depend on where it is incorporated
  • A decentralised project can still have a central actor

Definition

A non-profit organisation created to fund research, grants and adoption work for a specific blockchain or protocol, usually holding part of the initial token allocation to finance its activities.

Even when the software itself is open source and owned by no one, paying developers, handling legal matters and running events all require a legal entity with a bank account. Foundations exist to fill that role, and they are often incorporated in places with established non-profit frameworks such as Switzerland, Singapore or the Cayman Islands.

A foundation's main resource is the token allocation it received at launch. It sells or lends that supply over time to cover operating costs, development grants, audits and educational material. In practice this gives it considerable control over which parts of the ecosystem get funded.

It is also common for a foundation and a development company to exist side by side with overlapping roles. Who sets the specification, who moves the tokens and who speaks publicly differs from project to project. Reading the governance documents and annual reports is the practical way to see where authority actually sits.

Watch out for

  • · The existence of a foundation is not reassurance in itself — check its powers and holdings
  • · Foundation-held tokens can become future selling pressure
  • · Non-profit status says nothing about how transparent the accounts or grants are
