Definition
A scheme through which a foundation or DAO funds development, research or education that benefits its ecosystem, with no repayment obligation, typically awarded through review and paid in stages.
Every blockchain needs things that generate no direct revenue: developer tooling, documentation, audits, teaching material. Grants fill that gap, paid out of a foundation or DAO treasury, and recipients are usually required to release their work as open source.
Payment is typically tied to milestones. The application defines deliverables and deadlines, and funds are released in tranches as each is verified. That both reduces the risk of money disappearing and gives the funder a way to stop if direction changes.
From the outside, look at whether awards are published, whether the criteria and reviewers are named, and whether funded work actually shipped. A list of awards with no links to results, or repeated grants to the same circle of people, is a sign that operator discretion is doing most of the work.
