In short
Much of the technology in this field appears first as a peer-reviewed paper or preprint and is implemented afterwards. Papers state their assumptions and limits explicitly, which makes them the accurate place to see what is actually guaranteed and what is not. Where a whitepaper doubles as marketing, a research paper presents its claims in a form others can check.

Definition
An academic document setting out results in cryptography, distributed systems or mechanism design along with its assumptions, method, proofs and limitations — either peer reviewed or posted as a preprint.
Zero-knowledge proofs, consensus algorithms and analyses of MEV were all published academically before they were implemented. Because a paper spells out what holds under which assumptions, it is a practical way to see how far a guarantee actually extends.
A paper arguing that a consensus scheme is safe will state what fraction of participants can misbehave before it breaks, and what it assumes about network delay. If an implementation runs outside those assumptions, the paper's conclusion does not simply carry over — and reading that gap is the skill that matters.
A paper posted to a preprint server has not been reviewed. It may be wrong, and errors are sometimes identified later. When a project cites a paper as the basis for its design, it is worth checking whether that paper was peer reviewed and whether its conclusions match the conditions the implementation actually runs under.
