Definition
An exchange-traded fund that aims to track the price of a crypto asset or a related index. The manager holds the underlying coins or futures, and investors trade shares in that pool as ordinary securities.
In an ETF, a manager holds the underlying asset and lists shares in that pool on an exchange. For a crypto ETF the manager places the coins with a custodian, and investors simply trade the shares. Key management becomes the manager's problem, not yours.
The advantage is that everything runs on existing brokerage rails: the same trading hours, the same settlement, the same treatment for records and inheritance as any listed security. The cost is an ongoing management fee, and no way to react to price moves outside exchange hours.
Availability depends on each country's rules, and a fund listed in one market is not necessarily open to investors elsewhere. Tax treatment may also differ from holding the coin directly, so check both the offering firm's documentation and the National Tax Agency's guidance before deciding.
