In short

Pudgy Penguins began as a penguin-themed NFT collection issued on Ethereum in 2021. The rights to the collection were sold to new management in 2022, after which the project expanded into physical products such as toys and merchandise. PENGU is a token distributed in 2024 and is a separate asset from the NFTs.

Key points

  • Started as an NFT collection issued on Ethereum in 2021
  • Ownership of the project was sold in 2022, after which it focused on physical goods and licensing
  • Toys and merchandise reached retail shelves, an example of an NFT-originated brand
  • The PENGU token, distributed in 2024, is separate from holding the NFTs

Definition

A brand built out of a penguin-themed NFT collection that expanded into physical goods and licensing, and the token distributed in connection with it.

It began, like many profile-picture NFT projects, as a collection of image variations. After the 2021 launch, the original operators were accused of taking the funds, and in an unusual turn the holders drove a sale of the collection's rights to new owners.

Under new management, the strategy was to build brand recognition rather than depend on NFT resale activity. Plush toys and figures were sold through major retail chains, with codes on the packaging redeemable for digital items — an explicit bridge between physical and digital.

NFT holders receive a licence permitting commercial use of their character within defined limits, so holders can produce their own merchandise and works. Delegating brand expansion to holders this way is an approach used by other collections too.

In 2024 a token, PENGU, was distributed. It is a separate asset from the NFT collection and can be traded without holding an NFT. Holding the token does not confer the NFTs' rights or licence — a distinction that is easy to blur.

Watch out for

  • · The NFTs and the token are different assets with different rights; holding the token does not grant the commercial licence
  • · Brand expansion succeeding is a separate question from NFT or token prices being stable
  • · Popular collections attract fake mint sites and copycat collections, so verify the official contract address

Frequently asked questions

  • Does buying PENGU mean I own a Pudgy Penguins NFT?

No. PENGU is a fungible token and a separate asset from the collection's NFTs. The commercial-use licence attached to the NFTs does not come with the token.
