In short
Virtuals Protocol is a platform for creating AI agents and issuing a token tied to each one in a single flow. Its stated model is that each agent has its own token, with usage and revenue connected to it. It runs primarily on Base, an Ethereum layer 2.
Key points
- Lets anyone create an AI agent and issue a token for that agent at the same time
- Tokens are sold along a bonding curve and graduate to a liquidity pool once a threshold is reached
- Agents operate through integrations, posting to social platforms or acting inside games
- VIRTUAL serves as the base pair against which agent tokens trade
Definition
A platform that combines creating and running AI agents with issuing and trading a token for each agent, and the base token used across it.
Virtuals Protocol addresses ownership of and revenue from AI agents. Normally the rights and income from an AI service belong to the operating company; here each agent has a token, and the stated design is that holding it is how you participate.
Tokens are issued along a bonding curve: a formula under which the price rises as more is bought, and once a funding threshold is reached the token graduates to a DEX liquidity pool and trades normally. The low barrier to launching also means a large number of tokens can be created in a short time.
On the agent side, a framework connects agents to outside services. Behaviour is defined per integration — posting to social platforms, replying in chat, acting as a character inside a game. The assumption is that more usage of an agent translates into demand for its token.
It runs mainly on Base, an Ethereum layer 2, with deployments on other chains as well. VIRTUAL is the base pair for agent tokens, so trading across the platform routes through it.
Watch out for
- · Anyone can create an agent without review, so many tokens have nothing behind them or imitate existing projects
- · Bonding-curve issuance favours early buyers on price and makes sharp short-term moves structurally likely
- · Claims that an agent earns autonomously are not the same as revenue it actually produces; check published figures
Frequently asked questions
Does holding an agent's token make me the owner of that AI?
It does not confer legal ownership. The token is a platform-defined form of participation and guarantees no rights over the model or its outputs, and any revenue sharing depends on how each agent is configured.
