Establishing whether a social account or chat group is really operated by the project it claims, by following links from that project's own site.
Always start at the official site. Open the site you have bookmarked, or the published documentation, and use the account links it lists. A link running from the site to the account is the whole point of the check. A URL typed into an account's bio proves nothing, because anyone can type it.
Fix the order in which you read the account itself. Compare the handle string character by character rather than the display name — impersonators rely on look-alike characters, added symbols and trailing digits. Then look at the creation date and posting history: an account made weeks ago for a project that has existed for years is already a contradiction. Badges that can be bought were never designed to certify officialness.
Chat groups and communities work the same way round. Join through an invitation link on the official site, never through search results or an invitation from someone else. Accounts posing as administrators inside groups are copied too. Holding the assumption that a project does not open a private message with you first stops most of these approaches cold.
Then decide how you will behave day to day. Replies under an official post offering a 'support desk' are a standard feature of this space. When you need help, use the contact route published on the official site rather than a reply thread. The moment anything asks you to connect a wallet or sign, go back and question the route.
Be clear on the limit: a genuinely official account can still be taken over, and official accounts have posted fake distribution announcements. Confirming an account is real secures the entrance, not everything that comes through it. Check the domain of every link before you act on it.
