Definition
Fraud in which the contact poses as exchange or wallet staff, a public figure, an authority or an acquaintance, in order to obtain a transfer, information or a specific action.
Display names, avatars and bios are all freely chosen, and verification marks can sometimes simply be bought, so appearance is never evidence. Counterfeit accounts routinely occupy reply threads and the top of search results.
The common script is a message from 'official support' saying there is a problem with your account, steering you to a dedicated contact. Impersonating a public figure usually takes the form of a giveaway that promises to return double what you send. Both end at a transfer, a signature or a secret.
More recently, contact arrives under the name of someone you actually know, with plausible context — sometimes from their genuinely compromised account. So the account being real proves nothing either. When money enters the conversation, confirm with the person directly by another means, such as a phone call.
Two habits cover most of it. Corroborate any message from an operator against the notices inside the app or on the site you bookmarked. And accept as a rule that no arrangement where you send first and receive more back is ever real.
