The chat platforms crypto projects use for announcements and support, and the conventions that grew up there — role-based access, verification channels and bot automation.
The appeal is practical: simultaneous reach across time zones, developers answering directly, and role-gated channels. Urgent notices — a contract bug, a pause — routinely appear in chat before the site is updated.
The fraud is optimised for the same environment. Ask a question in a public channel and a 'support' account messages you within seconds. A fake verification bot asks you to connect and sign. An invite leads to a server with a near-identical name and icon. These patterns are constant and formulaic.
The countermeasures are simple but need to be absolute: only follow invites from the official site or the project's verified social account, turn direct messages off by default, treat any team member who contacts you first as fake, and read what you are signing and where it connects before approving. That alone removes most of the reported attacks.
