In short

Key points
- A dog-themed memecoin launched on Solana in December 2022
- Started by airdropping much of the supply to Solana users, developers and NFT holders
- Has no backing in business revenue or technical functionality
- Some Solana apps have added support, so it appears in payments and fee contexts
Definition
A dog-themed memecoin issued on Solana whose supply largely entered circulation through a free distribution.
Bonk appeared when interest in the Solana ecosystem had collapsed following the failure of a major exchange. The issuers, described as anonymous contributors, ran no investor presale and instead distributed broadly to Solana users, NFT holders and developers. That distribution method itself drew attention and spread among users.
Technically it is an ordinary token issued under Solana's standard token program. It has no chain or mechanism of its own and no functional distinguishing features. What defines a memecoin is that it circulates on community and attention rather than technology.
Since then some Solana exchanges, wallets, games and payment apps have added support, so it turns up in in-app payments and fees. That reflects choices individual apps made, not a use case built into any protocol.
The thing to hold onto is that its value rests on supply and demand alone. No revenue or usage fees support the price, so trading volume and price can contract quickly if attention moves elsewhere.
Watch out for
- · With no utility or revenue behind it, price swings can be extreme and steep declines can happen quickly
- · The initial distribution was broad, but holdings have since shifted through trading, and sales by large holders can move the price directly
- · Many fake tokens on Solana reuse the same name and imagery, so verify the official token address before trading
Frequently asked questions
If the token was given away, can I still lose money?
Tokens you received free cost nothing, but anything you buy on the market can lose value. There are also reported scams where approving a fake 'airdrop' token drains the wallet.
