In short
A yield-bearing stablecoin passes part of the return on its backing assets through to holders. That return comes from somewhere concrete — interest on short-term government paper, or on loans — and never from nothing. Accepting the yield means accepting the credit and liquidity risk of whatever generates it.
Key points
- A token that passes the return on its backing assets to holders
- The yield comes from real sources such as bond or loan interest
- Taking the yield means taking the credit risk behind it
- The structure is one layer more complex than a plain stablecoin
Definition
A stablecoin that reflects the income earned on its backing assets to holders, either by increasing balances or by raising the rate at which the token converts back to the base unit.
Two mechanisms are common. In one, the holder's balance grows over time; in the other, the balance stays fixed while the rate at which the token converts to the base unit rises. The second is often simpler for accounting, but because the price is no longer one, it is poorly suited to payments.
What matters is where the yield originates. Backed by short-term government paper, it is bond interest; lent out, it is what borrowers pay. The first carries little borrower credit risk but moves with rate levels; the second impairs principal if borrowers default. Either way, the income is compensation for a risk someone is bearing.
These tokens also promise two things at once: a stable price and an income. How losses at the investment layer are absorbed, and by whom, is a design decision you can only find by reading the offering documents and disclosures. Check it alongside the reserve breakdown.
Watch out for
- · Advertised returns move with market conditions, and principal is not guaranteed
- · Check eligibility and tax treatment in your jurisdiction before holding one
- · For payments, designs whose price is not one complicate the recipient's accounting
