When you forgot the memo or tag

In short

For assets that require a memo or tag, sending to an exchange without one means the transfer succeeds on-chain but cannot be matched to your account, so nothing appears in your balance. Confirm the destination really is an exchange, then report it to official support with the transaction ID. Most operators have a process for this, but it is not guaranteed, and it can take time and cost a fee.

Key points

  • This affects assets that use a memo or destination tag, such as XRP and XLM
  • The transfer itself succeeded, so it looks perfectly normal on the explorer
  • If the destination is an exchange there is a process to report it; for a personal wallet this does not apply
  • Investigation is not guaranteed and may involve a fee and several weeks

Definition

Sending an asset whose deposit address is shared among many users without the short identifier — memo, tag or destination tag — that tells the recipient which user the funds belong to.

Understanding the mechanism makes the response faster. For some assets, an exchange gives every user the same deposit address and distinguishes them with a per-user memo or tag instead. The address is the building; the memo is the room number. Send a parcel with no room number and it reaches the building but nobody knows whose it is. That is exactly the situation.

First confirm what actually happened. Search the transaction ID on an explorer and check the destination address, the amount, and that the memo or tag field is empty. Explorers label that field differently, but seeing that it has no value is enough. Save that screen — it becomes your evidence when you report it.

Then establish what the destination is. If it is the deposit address of an exchange you use, there is a route: most operators have a defined procedure for this kind of report, and generally ask for the transaction ID, the time, the amount and details of where you sent from. Be aware that investigation takes time, that some operators charge a fee for it, and that it can end without the funds being identified.

If the destination was a personal wallet, memos and tags are not used there and this is not your problem. Something else is delaying the deposit, so go back to the steps in 'When a deposit has not arrived'.

Preventing a repeat is simple. When a deposit screen shows a memo or tag alongside the address, copy both and paste each into its own field on the sending screen, then confirm with your eyes that both are filled before you send. Those two extra seconds are the whole fix. Exchanges normally state clearly on the deposit screen which assets need a memo; 'How to use a memo or tag' goes through it.

Watch out for

  • · Anyone who contacts you offering to 'recover a memo-less deposit' is a scam. Always report through the official site you bookmarked yourself, or the official app
  • · Requesting an investigation does not mean the funds come back; operators sometimes reply that they could not identify them
  • · Do not just send the same asset again 'to be safe'. You would simply create a second unidentifiable deposit

Frequently asked questions

  • I typed something random into the memo field.

It behaves the same as leaving it blank — it will not match your account, because only the exact value shown on the exchange's deposit screen identifies you. Report it to official support with the transaction ID.
