Exporting exchange statements and history

In short

Exchange history is usually viewable only for a limited window, and closing an account puts it out of reach entirely. Download the annual statement and the CSVs on a schedule, before you need them. Which documents support a return is a question for the National Tax Agency's guidance and a tax professional.

Key points

  • Three things to export: trade history, deposits/withdrawals, and the annual statement
  • Viewing windows are usually capped; anything older is simply unavailable
  • Export everything before you close an account, not after
  • Name files consistently — year, venue, type — so you can find them later

Definition

Saving the annual statement an exchange issues, plus the trade and transfer histories you can export from its interface, into storage you control.

History feels safe while the exchange is holding it. In practice the interface often only scrolls back so far, CSV exports cover a limited window, and a shutdown takes everything with it. Treat the history as your material rather than theirs, and move a copy to your own storage.

Export three things: executed trades, fiat and crypto deposits and withdrawals, and the annual statement issued once a year. The statement is a convenient single view of the year, but it will not show the detail of individual transactions, so keep the CSVs alongside it. Some venues put fees in a separate column or a separate file — open one export and look before you rely on it.

Quarterly beats annually. Left to December, the venue you stopped using in March is the one you forget. Name each file the same way — year, venue, type — and file it by year; three years on, that convention is the difference between a minute and an afternoon.

The critical moment is account closure. Once an account is closed you usually cannot log in, and the history goes with it. The exchange you no longer use is exactly the one to export in full before you shut it down. What documents are required as support for a return is set by rules that change, so confirm the current position with the National Tax Agency's guidance and a tax professional.

Watch out for

  • · After an account is closed, retrieving its history is usually impossible
  • · This page is a general orientation, not tax advice
  • · The scope and retention of required documents do change — check with the National Tax Agency and a tax professional

Frequently asked questions

  • If I have the annual statement, do I need the CSVs?

A statement is a yearly summary and may not show individual transactions. Reconciling cross-venue transfers or revisiting a calculation needs the underlying CSVs. Ask a tax professional how much detail your situation requires.
