In short

'Moon' means a price shooting upward; 'rekt' (wrecked) means being wiped out. 'To the moon' and 'rekt' describe the two ends of the same trade. Neither carries any figures, and shared excitement about mooning is not a basis for a decision.

Key points

  • 'Moon' describes a price spiking upward
  • 'Rekt' is a deliberate misspelling of wrecked
  • 'Moon' never comes with any actual numbers
  • Most rekt stories involve leveraged liquidation

Definition

'Moon' is slang for a price rising sharply in a short time. 'Rekt' — a respelling of 'wrecked' — describes taking a heavy loss, typically a forced liquidation on a leveraged position.

'To the moon' is deliberate hyperbole — a chart with a rocket attached. It is also a standard device for people who want you to buy something. Its defining feature is that it names no target, no timeframe and no reasoning, so it can never be shown to have been wrong.

'Rekt' is the other side. Borrowed from gaming slang, in markets it usually means a margin position was force-closed. With leverage, a move of a few per cent against you is enough, which is why a position taken in hope of a moon so often ends in liquidation.

That the two words travel together says something about the market. Sizing up in expectation of a spike and losing the money are not separate stories; they are the same story at different points. When you see 'moon', ask what price the poster means and on what basis. Almost none can answer.

Watch out for

  • · A price call with no target and no deadline cannot be checked and is not a forecast
  • · With leverage, a few per cent against you can close the position
  • · Wins get posted; losses mostly do not — the feed you see is filtered
