In short
Most Japanese exchanges publish an annual statement summarising a year's trading, available for download from early in the following year. You normally pick the year on a statements or settings screen and download it. Formats and what they cover differ by operator, though, so if you use several exchanges or wallets, one statement will not necessarily complete your filing.
Key points
- It appears after the year ends, on a schedule that differs by operator
- You typically choose the year and download it, usually as PDF or CSV
- What each statement covers varies, and transfers to outside wallets may not be included
- If you use several exchanges or wallets, the calculation must combine all of the records
Definition
A document in which an exchange summarises a year of your trading and results. It is used as material for a tax return, but it does not itself determine the tax due.
The usual route is to log in, open the statements or trading reports screen, choose the year and download. PDF is the common format, and some operators also provide a CSV of individual transactions. Some generate the file in the background and notify you when it is ready. Publication timing differs — sometimes early in January, sometimes only once the filing season is under way.
Once you have it, look at what it actually covers. Many statements summarise only trading inside the exchange, excluding transfers out to your own wallet and assets received from elsewhere. Treatment of assets received through lending, staking or campaigns also varies. Assuming the figure on the statement is the figure you file is risky.
If you use more than one exchange, collect the equivalent document from each and add your wallet activity as well. The acquisition-cost method — for example a total average or moving average approach — is chosen by the taxpayer and must be applied consistently across everything. Simply adding up each operator's statement does not necessarily produce the right number.
Decide how you will store them, too. Keep the statement and any CSV in a folder per year, with the exchange name and year in the filename. Once an account is closed or a service shuts down you cannot retrieve anything, so your own copy becomes the final record. 'Keeping records' covers this in more depth.
Finally, this article explains how to obtain the document, not how to calculate tax or what must be declared. Crypto taxation depends on the nature of each transaction and raises plenty of genuinely unclear cases. See 'Crypto and tax: the basics' for an overview, and consult a tax professional or your tax office about your own filing.
Watch out for
- · Do not treat the statement's figures as your filing figures — coverage differs by operator
- · Emails that pose as an 'annual statement' to get you to open an attachment exist. Always fetch the document by logging into the official app or site yourself
- · This article makes no tax determinations. Confirm your own filing with a tax professional or your tax office
Frequently asked questions
I cannot find the statement.
It may simply not have been published yet, and some operators do not produce one for a year in which you did not trade. The schedule is usually announced on the operator's notices page.
