In short

e-Tax is the National Tax Agency's electronic filing system. Using it requires setting up an identity verification method in advance, so it is not something to start on the day. The steps and prerequisites are updated from year to year — always take them from the official National Tax Agency and e-Tax pages.

Key points

  • An identity verification method has to be set up in advance
  • Steps and prerequisites change year to year — re-check the official pages each time
  • Access can be slow at busy times, so leave yourself room
  • Sending is not the end — confirm the receipt notification

Definition

The National Tax Agency's system for carrying out national tax procedures, including income tax returns, over the internet.

e-Tax lets you send a return without visiting a tax office. The usual route is to work through the National Tax Agency's online return preparation service and submit from there. For crypto, that means entering your calculated figures in the fields the screens indicate. Follow those instructions for which field and how — this site will not assert specific boxes.

Before you can use it, you need an identity verification method in place. Several options exist, each with its own preparation or application step, and none of them can be arranged on the day you intend to file. If this is your first electronic return, start the setup while you still have plenty of time, and take the current requirements from the official e-Tax pages, since they are revised from year to year.

While entering data, use the save function. Crypto figures go in alongside your other income, and the work often does not finish in one sitting. Saving at natural breaks means a closed browser does not send you back to the start.

Usage also concentrates towards the end of the filing period, when screens slow down or become hard to reach. Starting at the last moment risks a technical problem costing you the deadline. If the calculation is already done, entering and submitting early is simply safer.

Submitting is not the end. Check the notification confirming the return was accepted, and save a copy of what you sent. You will want that copy when you set up next year's calculation and if anyone asks about the content. Because the details change each year, confirm the procedure on the official pages.

Watch out for

  • · This page is a general orientation, not tax advice
  • · Steps and prerequisites change each year — always check the official pages
  • · Never enter identity verification details into any route that is not official
