In short

Maintenance is when an exchange suspends some or all functions to update or inspect its systems. Some windows are announced in advance; others are emergency work after an incident. Trading and withdrawals stop during the window, so it pays to know what goes offline and when.

Key points

  • A temporary suspension for updates or inspection
  • Scheduled, ad hoc and emergency windows all exist
  • Deposits and withdrawals can stop, not just trading
  • Timing and scope differ by operator

Definition

A planned or emergency suspension of trading, deposits, withdrawals or other functions while an exchange updates, inspects or repairs its systems, usually announced in advance.

An exchange runs around the clock, but updates and configuration changes cannot all be made without pausing something. Many operators therefore reserve regular maintenance windows during quieter hours and announce them through notices or app alerts.

The scope varies widely. Sometimes only deposits and withdrawals for one asset are paused; sometimes all trading stops. Suspending transfers for a single asset around a network upgrade is also common practice.

The point to watch is that prices keep moving while you cannot act. Your holdings continue to be repriced on the wider market, yet you can neither sell nor withdraw. Checking the maintenance calendar in advance, and not keeping everything in one place, reduces how much that matters.

Watch out for

  • · You cannot trade or withdraw while the market keeps moving
  • · Announced end times can be extended
  • · Timing and affected functions differ by operator — read their notices
