Definition
The possibility that, while converting value received in one currency into another, market movement leaves the final amount different from what was expected.
When a merchant accepts crypto, the rate shown at checkout and the rate at which the receipt is actually converted differ. A few minutes waiting for confirmations turns market movement into a shortfall. Gateways absorb this by guaranteeing a rate for a window — and the cost of that guarantee is inside their fee.
Accepting a dollar-denominated stablecoin removes most of the crypto volatility. But if you spend in yen, the dollar-yen rate remains. Conversion risk has not disappeared; it has changed shape.
Practical responses are to convert on receipt and hold no balance, to fix the rate-guarantee window and its conditions in the contract, and to price in an expected range of movement. None eliminates the risk, so the real decision is how much of it to accept.
