Assigning an inferred owner, service or purpose to a blockchain address, using transaction patterns, addresses the operator has published, and outside sources of information.
The ledger holds addresses and amounts, nothing else. So analytics providers annotate addresses using what exchanges have published, the timing and batching habits of deposits and withdrawals, and the way funds connect. Those annotations underpin metrics like exchange flows.
How much a label is worth depends on its basis. An address an operator published itself is solid; one inferred from transfer patterns can be wrong. When an exchange rotates to new addresses, old labels quietly stop matching reality, and two providers labelling the same address differently is common.
The sharpest risk is when labeling reaches toward individuals. Cross-referencing the ledger with social media posts can point at a real person — and that inference can be mistaken. Naming the wrong person can wreck a livelihood and a reputation. Identifying someone publicly carries serious legal and ethical weight.
