In short

TRON is a blockchain from a project founded in 2017 that uses DPoS, where a small elected set of representatives produces blocks. Cheap transfers have made it a widely used rail for USDT. Its centralised governance and a regulator's lawsuit against its founder are recurring concerns.

Key points

  • DPoS consensus in which 27 elected Super Representatives take turns producing blocks
  • Heavily used for transferring TRC-20 USDT
  • A distinctive fee model where freezing TRX grants bandwidth and energy
  • Its founder, Justin Sun, was sued by the US SEC in 2023

Definition

A DPoS blockchain in which a small set of elected representatives produce blocks, and TRX, its native asset.

TRON was pitched as a platform for distributing and monetising content without intermediaries. In practice, though, its dominant role today is as a low-cost rail for stablecoins — particularly moving USDT between exchanges and across borders.

It runs Delegated Proof of Stake. TRX holders vote to elect 27 Super Representatives, and only they produce blocks. A small producer set makes confirmation fast and fees cheap, but it also means validation rests with a fixed handful of parties, so decentralisation is limited.

The fee model is unusual. Locking TRX for a period allocates bandwidth and energy, and within those allowances transfers cost effectively nothing. That makes costs predictable for businesses sending frequently, which helped drive USDT adoption. Smart contracts run in an EVM-compatible environment.

One caveat: in 2023 the US SEC sued founder Justin Sun and associated companies over alleged unregistered securities sales and market manipulation. Critics also point repeatedly to the foundation's and founder's influence over the chain's direction. The practical benefit of cheap fees and these governance and regulatory questions are separate matters.

Watch out for

  • · With only 27 block producers, it is among the less decentralised major public chains
  • · Its founder and affiliated companies face an SEC lawsuit, creating regulatory uncertainty
  • · When sending USDT, confirm whether the destination expects TRC-20 or ERC-20 — the wrong standard means lost funds

Frequently asked questions

  • Is TRON the best network for sending USDT?

Fees tend to be low, but only if the receiving exchange or wallet supports it. Always check the supported networks on the recipient's deposit page.
