In short
Terra Classic is the name now given to the original Terra blockchain, the one that collapsed in May 2022. UST, an algorithmic stablecoin meant to track the dollar, lost its peg, and LUNA — the asset whose supply was supposed to absorb that pressure — was minted in enormous quantities and lost almost all of its value. A new chain was later forked off, and the original chain was renamed Terra Classic with its asset renamed LUNC.
Key points
- UST held no collateral; it was meant to hold its dollar peg purely by swapping against LUNA
- In May 2022 UST fell below one dollar and LUNA issuance spiralled, collapsing both assets
- The chain was halted, a new Terra 2.0 chain was forked, and the original became Terra Classic
- Terraform Labs and its founder faced legal proceedings in several jurisdictions
Definition
The name for the pre-collapse Terra blockchain and its native asset LUNC, which community validators have kept running since 2022.
Terra set out to build a dollar-pegged stablecoin without holding bank deposits or dollar assets as collateral. The mechanism was a promise to swap: one UST could always be exchanged for a dollar's worth of LUNA, and a dollar's worth of LUNA for one UST. The assumption was that arbitrage would pull the price back whenever it drifted.
Demand was underpinned by Anchor Protocol, a deposit product on Terra that paid a high, steady yield on UST. Large amounts of UST accumulated there. That yield was not funded by returns alone — it was topped up from a reserve, a point widely criticised afterwards.
In May 2022, large withdrawals pushed UST below a dollar. As designed, UST was burned and new LUNA was minted. But the price kept falling while minting continued, so LUNA's supply expanded by orders of magnitude and its value effectively vanished. Validators halted the chain, and tens of billions of dollars in market value were wiped out within days.
A community vote then forked a new chain, Terra 2.0 (with a new LUNA), and the original was renamed Terra Classic, its assets becoming LUNC and USTC. The old chain still runs under community validators, and proposals such as burning part of the transaction tax have been implemented, but USTC has never regained its dollar peg. Terraform Labs faced US securities charges, and its founder faced criminal proceedings in multiple countries.
Watch out for
- · This asset actually collapsed in 2022 and most holders at the time lost nearly everything; the history is essential context
- · The old chain has no corporate steward and is maintained by volunteers and a subset of validators
- · USTC still carries the stablecoin label, but nothing backs its dollar peg any more
Frequently asked questions
Are LUNC and LUNA the same asset?
No. LUNC is the asset of the collapsed original chain; LUNA is the asset of the chain forked in May 2022. The similar names make it easy to pick the wrong market, and the two run on different networks.
