Chain upgrades cannot safely be tried in production, yet testnets lack real economic incentives. Kusama was built to fill that gap: same design lineage as Polkadot, but running independently, with new features shipping first in an environment where real assets move.
The differences are mostly parameters. Voting periods, delays before enactment and validator rotation cycles are all shorter, so changes take effect quickly. The trade-off is that users have to keep up with more frequent specification changes.
Structurally it mirrors Polkadot: purpose-built chains, or parachains, secure a slot connecting them to a central relay chain. Slots are allocated through auctions and leases, and that mechanism itself was exercised on Kusama first.
It is often described as a canary network — the thing that surfaces problems first. Despite the label, it is a live production network, and KSM trades with real value.
