In short

Jupiter is an aggregator that searches across Solana's decentralised exchanges for the best route for a swap. Rather than being a single DEX, it splits and routes orders through existing pools. JUP is its governance token, distributed in 2024 and used for DAO decisions.

Key points

  • Searches liquidity across multiple DEXs and assembles a swap route automatically
  • Splits large orders across several routes to limit price impact
  • Offers limit orders, recurring buys and perpetual futures alongside spot swaps
  • JUP was distributed widely in 2024 and is used for DAO governance

Definition

A DEX aggregator that searches liquidity across Solana's decentralised exchanges and builds and executes the best swap route.

As the number of decentralised exchanges grows, the same swap gets different rates at each venue. Comparing them by hand is impractical, and closing that gap automatically is what an aggregator does.

Jupiter reads the state of pools across Solana's DEXs and computes a route. Going from token A to token B may be cheaper through an intermediate token, and splitting an order across several routes can reduce price impact. Jupiter performs that search automatically.

Its feature set extends beyond spot swaps: limit orders that execute at a chosen price, recurring buys on a schedule, margin-based perpetual futures and token launch sales are all available from the same interface. Many other applications also embed Jupiter's swap routing.

JUP was distributed in 2024 to addresses with a history of use, and DAO votes have since covered operating policy and treasury spending. The token's own supply plan has itself been put to a vote.

Watch out for

  • · A bug in any DEX or pool along the route can cause a failed swap or a loss
  • · Anyone can issue tokens on Solana, so verify contract addresses to avoid look-alike fakes
  • · Leveraged features such as perpetual futures can wipe out posted margin when prices move

Frequently asked questions

  • Do aggregators make swaps more expensive?

Splitting a route raises network fees, but the improved rate often more than offsets that. Check the quoted output amount shown before you confirm.
