In short

Algorand is a blockchain designed by the cryptographer Silvio Micali that launched in 2019. Its Pure Proof of Stake mechanism randomly selects a block proposer and a verification committee from among holders, and it is designed so that the chain does not fork — confirmed blocks are never rolled back.

Key points

  • A verifiable random function (VRF) reselects the proposer and committee for every block
  • The chain is designed not to fork, so a block is final once approved
  • Simply holding ALGO makes you eligible for selection; no lock-up is required
  • The Algorand Foundation plays a large role in both technology and funding

Definition

A Proof of Stake blockchain in which a committee chosen by a verifiable random function approves each block, aiming for immediate finality without forks.

In many Proof of Stake designs, large stakers stay involved in block production continuously, which risks entrenching a fixed set of participants. Algorand instead reselects participants for every block. Nobody can predict who will be chosen, and only the winner can prove their own selection.

That lottery uses a verifiable random function. Each participant draws privately with their own key and, if selected, proposes or votes with a proof attached. Because an attacker cannot know in advance whom to target, disrupting specific nodes is difficult.

Once consensus is reached, the chain does not fork. Most chains assume recent blocks may occasionally be replaced, so operators ask how many confirmations are safe; on Algorand a block is final as soon as it is approved.

For applications, token issuance is a built-in feature (Algorand Standard Assets), and the chain has been used for stablecoin issuance and for tokenising rights such as bonds and property. Smart contracts run in an execution environment called the AVM.

Watch out for

  • · The initial token allocation and the Foundation's release policy have long been debated
  • · Fast finality is not the same as high usage; check what applications actually run there
  • · The reward mechanism has been changed several times, so current terms should be confirmed from official sources

Frequently asked questions

  • Does holding ALGO automatically earn rewards?

The reward design has changed several times since launch. For a period, simply holding earned a distribution, but the current terms should be checked in the official documentation.
